The Obio/Akpor Local Government Area joined the global community to commemorate the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child with the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead – Girls on the Frontline of Crisis.” The colourful event, held at the Council Secretariat, brought together young girls, women leaders, educators, and community stakeholders to celebrate and promote the rights, empowerment, and leadership of girls in society.In her inspiring address, the Wife of the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Mrs. Flora Worlu, expressed profound appreciation to notable women leaders who have been championing the cause of women and girls in Nigeria.
“Esteemed ladies and gentlemen, I would like to acknowledge the wife of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the amiable wife of our Governor, Lady Valerie Chinulani Fubara, who though not physically here, have given us the impetus to replicate the good works they are doing at the federal and state levels,” she stated.
Mrs. Worlu also extended heartfelt gratitude to her husband, the Chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, Hon. (Dr.) Gift Worlu, for his unwavering support and empowerment initiatives that made the event possible.
“Let me also recognize specially, even though not here for now, my dear husband, Hon. (Dr.) Gift Worlu, who graciously approved and empowered us to bring our girls together for this momentous event. May God continue to strengthen and guide you, sir,” she added.
While addressing the enthusiastic audience, Mrs. Gift Worlu underscored the importance of empowering the girl child as a means to achieving a just and progressive society.
“Today, we gather to celebrate a day dedicated to promoting girls’ rights, empowerment, and equality. This year’s theme highlights girls’ leadership and resilience in the face of humanitarian, social, and environmental crises—emphasizing their roles as change makers and problem solvers,” she noted.
The First Lady of Obio/Akpor LGA emphasized that girls must never shy away from leadership roles or be silenced, asserting that their voices and opinions matter in building a better society.
“As the wife of the Chairman of this great local government area, I am honored to stand before you to advocate for the welfare and development of our girls. Girls are the backbone of our society, and their empowerment is crucial to our collective progress,” she affirmed.
She highlighted that many girls still face barriers such as limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, calling on all stakeholders to unite in ensuring that every girl in Obio/Akpor thrives and fulfills her potential.
“In Obio/Akpor, we commit to creating a supportive environment that allows our girls to thrive. Let us work together to build a society where every girl has access to quality education, healthcare, and opportunities to succeed,” Mrs. Worlu said.
She concluded her heartfelt speech with words of encouragement to the young girls in attendance:
“To the girls of Obio/Akpor, you are valued, you are loved, and you are empowered. Never give up on your dreams and never let anyone dull your sparkle. You are the future leaders, and we believe in you.”
The event also featured a health awareness session led by Dr. Jaja from the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board, who provided essential health tips to the girl child. Dr. Jaja emphasized the importance of hygiene, menstrual health management, balanced nutrition, and regular medical checkups, encouraging the girls to maintain good personal hygiene and prioritize their well-being to remain strong and confident.
“A healthy girl is a confident girl,” Dr. Jaja stated, while urging parents and guardians to ensure their daughters have access to proper health information and care.
The celebration ended on a high note with closing remarks by the Vice Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. (Dr.) Joyce Nyeche, who on behalf of the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. (Dr.) Gift Worlu, and the entire council, I sincerely thank everyone who made this event possible — our organizers, our esteemed guests, and especially our girls, whose energy and enthusiasm light up this hall today.
“To our parents and guardians, let us continue to nurture and support our daughters. Let us give them the education, encouragement, and opportunities they deserve. Together, we can raise a generation of strong, confident, and visionary young women who will stand on the frontlines of leadership and change.”
Adding colour and excitement to the celebration, there was a drama presentation scripted and directed by Dr. Ovunda Ihunwo of the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, University of Port Harcourt. The captivating drama piece beautifully captured the theme of the day, highlighting the resilience, courage, and leadership potential of the modern girl child in overcoming societal challenges.
The audience was thrilled by the outstanding performance, which drew loud applause and admiration from dignitaries and participants alike.
The climax of the celebration came when the First Lady of Obio/Akpor, Mrs. Flora Worlu, presented gift items to the excited young girls, as a token of love and encouragement. The gesture was received with joy and excitement, leaving the young participants beaming with smiles and gratitude.
